For this project, I created a playful and dynamic identity for a museum about patterns and motifs - the 'Auckland Museum of Pattern and Motif.' It encompassed bright, retro colours, organic shapes and patterns, and modern, rounded typefaces to appeal to a wide demographic. This identity was also established in an A5 brand manual that contained the museum's overall design strategy, visual identity, and the application of this identity.
The logo represents unity through its spiral mark, and is primarily used in orange to encompass a sense of positive energy. The modular graphic system is also derived from fragments of the logomark, emphasising the main values of the museum - unity and community.
The colour palette represents the 6 exhibits at the museum, as well as the feelings they evoke. The colours are not only bright to appeal to a younger audience, but also a bit desaturated and retro to appeal to older demographics, finding a middle ground and balance. The icons have a playful, handdrawn style. Exhibit icons are simple, like a dress for Dress and Garments, and arrows and bathroom icons are also stripped down to basic shapes for simplicity and recognisability.
New Order was selected as it is a geometric, sans serif typeface that complements the organic and rounded graphic system, as well as the feel of the colour palette. Quicksand is functional and easily readable, supporting the brand's welcoming atmosphere.
